Smart snacking when working at home

This is a sponsored post, brought to you by Mayver’s.

For many of us who have again found ourselves Working at Home, snacking can be a much-welcomed break after a spending many hours in front of a computer screen. Being in close vicinity to the fridge can be challenging though, as one of the most significant predictors of food consumption, whether we need to eat or not, is availability. This means that if you have tempting foods within easy reach, chances are you will eat them. So, with many of us a home for another few weeks if not months, here are some snacking secrets and yummy healthier ideas so you can still enjoy your snacks, without overdoing the calories.

Get the balance right

The first step to getting your snacking on track is to think of a snack as a mini meal or a mix of foods that offer both key nutrients and are filling so you are kept full and satisfied until your next meal. Foods that are a good source of protein, dietary fibre and good quality carbs such as fruit, wholegrain crackers, dairy or nuts and 100% nut spreads like Mayver’s 100% Natural Peanut Butter are all tasty, appealing options.

Portion control is everything

The next step in taking control of your snacking at home is to keep your portions controlled. Measuring out or packing your snacks like cheese, crackers, dips or peanut butter in advance will go a long way in ensuring you do not overeat. Where possible buy pre-packaged snacks in individual portions rather than large packs or repackage snacks into individual serves to help avoid temptation.

Make your snacks exciting

One of the reasons we are snacking a lot more ATM is that we are a little bored. Bored of being at home; bored about eating the same thing every day, bored of the current scenario and one way we can relieve this boredom is by finding tasty, delicious foods to munch on through the day. For this reason, making new exciting snacks is an easy way to help relieve your boredom but to also boost your nutrition and help you get excited about your food again. Try out some new muffins, protein bites or these delicious Apple & Cinnamon Protein Balls, using Mayver’s 100% Natural Peanut Butter which taste as good as they look.

Opt for natural whole foods

One of the reasons we are more likely to overeat packaged snacks is that we can eat them extremely quickly, plus they are frequently made using flavours that encourage us to eat more and more. Natural, whole foods that are minimally processed on the other hand generally take longer to eat, are a lot more filling and do not promote overconsumption the way processed foods do. Even if you do occasionally enjoy more processed snacks, try and team them with some whole foods such as nuts, 100% natural nut spreads fruit, cheese or milk.

Take time to enjoy your snacks

One of the benefits of working at home is that you can actually take a few minutes to prepare your snacks and even sit outside to enjoy them. Here, plating up some colourful snacks like chopped fruit and veges, crackers, seeds, nuts and dips like hommus and Mayver’s 100% Natural Peanut Butter creates a special snacking occasion to break up the work day, so you can enjoy and savour some delicious fresh food rather than mindlessly munching in front of the computer.
